Exercise in Awareness

Eckhart Tolle explains the relationship between awareness and thinking like this: “Awareness is the space in which thoughts exist when that space has become conscious of itself.”

Okay, that is deep. Let me break it down; when we go through our days on auto-pilot we are not in the space of awareness. Let’s take something super simple that is programmed into our brains as an example: opening a door. You don’t have to think about it you just do it. That is auto-pilot. Making coffee, driving to work, brushing your teeth, taking a shower, all auto-pilot.

Try this, next time you go to open a door use your non-dominant hand (your left if you are right-handed, and vice-versa). That is awareness. Right there. So simple. Try it.

To take it a step further, thoughts that have emotion connected to them hold the keys to our feelings, good and bad. When you become aware of thoughts that create negative emotions or feelings you have hit the jackpot of change because you are now conscious of the thoughts that are getting in your way.

Awareness is your way in to conscious living.

Unconscious thoughts are like a strong current pulling you away from your conscious life.
